Leisure

 Leisure by William Davies

  • Critical analysis of the poem
  • Effects of modernization
  • Why is the poet not happy with a stressed life?
  • What does the poet want human beings to do to make their life happy and meaning full?

Too much mechanisation of life has excercised very deep and negative impacts on human mind and attitude to the things around. The greatest impact is that man has got awfully immersed in the mundane activities. These wordly activites have ultimately separated him from all those persuits that can contribute a lot to the solace of mind and soul. In an indirect way, the poet suggests in this poem that man has got separated from the flow of spirituality due to his attraction towards purely materialistic fascinations.

This poem is vividly soaked in what can be termed as Wordsworthian ting. We mean to say that in this poem, William Davies also refer to the natural phenomena in the same manner as William Wordsworth repeatedly does in his poems. The second thing is that Davies also seems to be possessed of the same mystical approach to the subjects as is done by Wordsworth.

In a rather sad manner, the poet recalls that the modern mechanical existence has deprived man of many virtues and made him totally ignorant to the things which can  provide him mental and spiritual food. He finds no time for fixing his curious gaze on the beautiful phenomena in his leisure. Material attractions have completely eclipsed those beauties. These beauties can give him moral strength and spiritual elevation too. In a nutshell, he has been spiritually paralyzed on account of his too much involvement in worldly attractions .

If taken as a whole, the poem under discussion is a trenchant satire on the modern world. Due to his inner spiritual hollowness, man finds no time to stand and stare at the beauties which can provide him spiritual pleasure and glorification. The poet wants us to tear off the clothes of mechanization and spend a simple life which has not to do with cares, boredom or sufferings at the hands of mechanization of worldly life. Poet wants us to lead a simple life.
